I have never had massage therapy, what is it and what should I expect?

This long-respected healing art has a history which stretches back thousands of years and is done worldwide. The first written records of massage therapy date back to 3,000 years ago in China, but most likely human touch has been used to soothe since the beginning of consciousness in  human beings. To massage a sore muscle or or therapeutically touch another in comfort is a basic human instinct; The "laying of hands" has been valued among spiritual and healing traditions throughout history.

Massage is a general term for a range of therapeutic  touching with roots in both Eastern and Western cultures. It involves the practice of manipulating a person's muscles and other soft tissue with the intent in improving a person's well-being or health, and may include, but not be limited to, deep tissue, percussion, vibration, and joint movement.

First, we'll discuss what  areas you'd like massaged. Are you on medications, have  arthritic conditions or medical muscle problems, or sports injury? Please let me know! Secondly, you'll be escorted to the massage room area. There you'll find a very comfortable environment with soft lighting, soothing music, pleasant smells. You'll be asked to disrobe to your comfort level (usually underwear)...and place a gown on or lay under a covers, towels, etc. Massage. If your not comfortable with that, please wear or bring comfortable shorts and a sleeveless top with you that you can change into.

Priscilla DOES NOT DO SEXUAL or EROTIC massage! Please do not ask. Please fully read the massage disclaimer. The length of the message depends on you. In home Appointments (were Priscilla travels to you)  are scheduled for one hour to  ninety minutes only.  Fifteen to thirty minute massages are done in the office.

For your first time, it is suggested you  schedule an hour - it gives you the full benefit of a stress free hour of total relaxation. But if you are pressed for time an hour isn't necessary as long as you know that Priscilla only does those at the office.

Does massage hurt?

A massage shouldn't hurt you. A light massage that doesn't probe very deep into muscles shouldn't hurt. Yet, at the same time, the deeper varieties of  massage designed to work out stress that's deep within those muscles may leave you a bit sore. A relaxed  muscle will be supple and soft and won't hurt when rubbed or touched. Muscles that are tight, and in many cases have been chronically tight for a very long time, such as in myofascial pain syndrome  or Fibromyalgia might feel slightly uncomfortable with deeper massage. it could feel similar to the feeling when you over exercise.

After an injury your muscles might be very sore from overuse or tightness, and a sharp pain may indicate a muscle that has been injured and has some sort of inflammation. In this case, you don't want deep tissue work to continue in this area.

Everybody has a maximum limit to the amount of pain they feel. The intensity of massage over the muscles may not be deep enough for one person while it may cause soreness for another. Some people want the massage to penetrate the muscle  as deep as possible regardless of how uncomfortable it might be. Others may prefer something much lighter to help them relax rather than deeper work that might be sore. So make your preference known to Priscilla beforehand and most importantly while she's giving you the massage. Feedback at any time during a massage is crucial to your enjoyment.

If I  am sore afterwards from my massage, what should I do?

Some times people who've never had a massage have a slight soreness. Much like exercise, if you haven't done any in a long time, the muscles will respond by being a bit sore, but then they'll continue to adjust. Your soreness may depend on how tight your muscles have been and how deep the massage was. A nice warm soak in a bath tub, shower or hot tub should help to  relax the soreness.

It is also important to hydrate and drink plenty of liquids, (water preferably) at least 24- 4b hours afterwards. This helps to eliminate toxins that build up in the muscles that massage helps to release.

How often should I have a massage?

This really depends on you. Some people with high stress jobs or very psysical demands in their lives benefit from a weekly session, while others might need to come a couple of times a week while healing from an injury. Others may only need a massage once a month.

People with diseases such as Fibromyalgia, chromic muscle pain, and other myalgias may only need massage while the condition is flared. Others enjoy massage as a special treat once in awhile. So it seriously depends on what you'd like to achieve through massage. There is no set rule.

I am bashful, do I have to be undressed or partially undressed to have a message?

No, not really, although neck, arms, legs and back would benefit from being exposed, it's not necessary. Your comfort level is what's important! As Long as you wear or bring with you a pair of shorts and short sleeved top, that works fine. If your not comfortable with that, then you can have a massage with full clothing, just make sure to wear comfortable clothes, nothing tight fitting or binding, etc..

Many people feel comfortable in their underwear. All areas that are not being worked on will be covered with a sheet or towel.
