Body Mind and Spirit Connection and Massage

Priscilla understands that allowing ourselves the luxury to heal is one of the hardest things many of us face. As Parents, students we usually tend to put ourselves last while perusing careers and raising a family. In fact, a recent study says most people return to work BEFORE they should after injury or illness due to financial pressure.

In America, our society is driven to work hard and according to The American Institute of Stress, stress is the number one health problem in our great Nation. We are our own worst enemies. Mothers and fathers tend to put their families needs before anything else and before long health issues begin to erupt.

Stress is certainly an unavoidable part of life, but it can be managed effectively by taking care of the Body the Mind and the Spirit. Priscilla knows that massage is one of those tools that help to reduce stress but without exercise, proper nutrition massage alone only places a Band-Aid on underlying mental, physical and spiritual difficulties.

The Mind Often depression is one of the leading symptoms of stress. The mind feels overwhelmed when faced with unforeseen obstacles, job loss, unexpected financial difficulties and sudden illness.  When the mind is out of balance, the body suffers and we tend to become lax about exercise and good nutrients. We also end up having the inability to think clearly. We’ll resort to medications that, while effective for depression – create toxicity and adverse reactions.

One of the natural combatants to depression is moderate exercise –Where you’re in the gym, doing aerobic training and moderate to vigorous walking are by far the best medicine for the mind as natural endorphins release during physical activity. Endorphins are like natural relaxant drugs and affect the mind in many positive ways.  Symptoms of mental stress are:

v     Feeling a need to please others at the expense of a person's needs and wellbeing.

v     Blaming others for every thing out of your (as well as their) control.

v     Perfectionism and relentless comparisons between oneself and others.  Having poor organizational skills.

v     Inability to ‘turn’ the mind off – often stressing over jobs

Massage truly allows the mind to relax naturally. Many people often fall asleep while being worked on by a massage therapist. If the mind is relaxed then the body and Spirit are relaxed as well. When the mind relaxes there’s a whole release of positive reactions inside that promote healing.

The Body - As with the mind – the body reacts very negatively to stress.  Muscle tension, spasm, chronic pain, and injury are often triggered by physical and emotional stress. All these types of stress can induce the "fight or flight" response. The body recognizes stress as a signal to prepare for action. The adrenal glands secrete the hormones adrenaline and cortisol, and these stress hormones flood the body. Heart rate and blood pressure rise, respiration quickens, oxygen flows to the muscles, and immune cells prepare to rush to the site of an injury. Even if there is none!

The body places itself into “flight or fight’ mode during stressful episodes driving up harmful levels of adrenalstress’ hormones and if done quiet regularly – the body natural immunity begins to break down and looses it’s ability to fight off illnesses and to maintain critical balance and illness and disease is the result. Healing of all kinds requires a state of rest, which may be impossible with chronic stress.

Massage will help to break up the negative toxins that build inside the body – helping it to loosen and release and helps body and mind as well as spirit to relax. And let go.

The Spirit Perhaps the most neglected part of nurturing ourselves is we tend to ignore our spiritual selves.  Reading inspirational materials, connecting to God, as we understand Him via our church or private belief is truly food for the soul. .  Walking in nature, taking time to Meditate all seem to get a back burner to hectic schedules complicated with unforeseen mishaps.

The spirit will grow weary if we do not give ourselves a break once in while. When was the last time you pampered your self or did nothing but relax?  Learning to give your self a special treat shouldn’t be few and far between but should be used as tools for wellness and spiritual maintenance.  This may well be the most important thing you will ever do for yourself!
